The new direction for the French Connection AW11 advertising has a nice fresh approach
in it's art direction and communication and should help raise the brand profile again.

One interesting part to this campaign, is where the creative has come from. The new UK
based agency 101 started up their shop in January 2011 and is essentially a breakaway
from Fallon London. The creative team is responsible for era-defining campaigns including
Sony's "Balls" and Cadbury's "Gorilla" and Eyebrows."
Expectations are high!

Banksy is up for an Oscar this year for his documentary 'Exit Through The Gift Shop' and for the last couple of

weeks new street art pieces have been popping up all over LA. There is much speculation about his appearance to

the event on Sunday. I think he won't turn up, will he do a stunt if he wins, hopefully. Will he win? Probably not...

I hope so but I think it will go to this film below. Anyway the Banksy documentary is great, even if it is mockumentary.

If you missed the amazing documentary 'The Life in a Day' you may be able to find it somewhere online.
It's well worth a watch from a filmmaking point of view, with honest and humanistic insight into the world we live in.

Ridley Scott is behind it and to cut a long story short, it's 80,000 clips (45000 hours) of footage cut into a 90-minute

fly on the wall documentary (shot by the people) about everyday people and their life. The best bits make it into the

movie. You can hear Ridley speak about the project in the clip at the bottom of this post.

From a digital data, information tech point of view, I think what these guys have done below is very cool!

Art is often a reaction to the world we live in and as the world around us is shifting, not just in terms of technology
but also within behaviour, it's really exciting to see how the art world is embracing and experimenting within it.
Not that artists are new to embracing technology, but there are much more possibilities opening up. It's interesting to
see how these individual perceptions and technologies are illustrated and explored within the art world.
Art often influences the advertising world (amongst other fields) due to style, original techniques and thinking,
I look forward to seeing more artistic reactions to the behavioral shifts to the world we are currently moving more into.
On the other hand, I like my classics so I imagine that original thinking and simplicity will be most influential to me.
One of the best things about art is that it's open to interpretation.

This is a great little documentary that doesn't try to answer all the questions, but rather bring them to the table.
A lot of great and influential speakers/artists in there as well ;-)
I'm not sure if I totally agree with Aaron Koblin and his opening line about time, maybe he has more time than most?

Well it's been sometime since my last blog post! After a lovely extended Xmas and New Year holiday in Morocco...
we're well into 2011 now, it's almost like there wasn't any holiday or even a 2010. Where does the time go?
But being busy is a good thing ;-)

Thanks to all my readers/viewers in the world. The most interesting thing I've found is that I now have more
visitors from Australia, jumping up to number 2, below the US but just ahead of Sweden and the UK. Thanks Oz!

During my time away from blogging I've immersed myself in a lot of reading, 2010 in reflection and all the
fantastic predictions for 2011 and beyond. In January social media was ablaze with brands, forums and individuals
sharing and blogging like crazy. I decided to take the opposite approach and let everyone try and shout over each other...
opting to look for my own 2011, based on where we've been, 2010, industry innovations, social and people shifts... etc.

Mico-blogging has also sucked me in more, my iPad makes it a much easier way to view content faster and keep
informed, since July last year my UX with the device has shifted (tablets will change behavior a lot, but in time)
but my Read It Later apps have come more into play, resulting in a good way to store links but making it harder
to finish longer articles :-( I hope to reverse this habit this year, somehow.

2011
Apart from reading up on many different subjects lately, I've been rather busy with work projects and private
projects, some of which I will showcase here in the next few months.
And, as well as focusing on all the new creative inspiration and innovation stuff (as usual), I'll also be revisiting
and clearing out my blog folder (the vast collection of planned but never realized links) from over the years, to then
post the most creative, interesting and still valid things.
If time is on my side, or even not, I will endeavor to post more, realising the personal value of a blog again...
remembering why I originally started to blog, with or without visitors.

Anyway enough about me, check out this cool vid from London NYE...

When I first saw this after the holidays, my first impressions were...

1) Wow! Amazing! I miss London (well sometimes maybe)
2) WTF, 10 minutes of fireworks! Why didn't they give the money to charity or something/someone in more need?
3) Well, London and the UK are in need. After the hard y€ar or so, everyone can do with cheering up right?
Plus, this works as a great PR tool for the city of London, keeping it on the world map. The 2012 Olympics are just
round the corner, London needs those tourists!

Kanye West, love his music or hate it... I really like the fact that not only is he pushing himself musically
but visually as well. Not anything new within the history of music, but within his genre he really stands out a lot
with a more artistic approach, which over time has seen his profile grow and should keep him relevant for longer.

Caught this YouTube clip this morning, it was on 645,291 views, tonight it's jumped to 1,647,977!
With Gaga reaching 1 billion YouTube views, these type of big (pop) numbers are something to get used to.

This epic visual opera definitely beats the usual bling approach! Directed by Kanye, written by Hype Williams.

BISON: "We'd been looking into an old 3D technique called "Anaglyph", which is the familiar red and cyan version of 3d
that you used to get on the back of cereal boxes. The more we looked at various images that used this technique, the more
we fell in love with the colours and decided that they should drive the aesthetic of the piece. In particular, we were
intrigued as to what might happen if the two images were from drastically different sources.

"The song is full of light and shade; with euphoric melodies and skipping glitchy beats. It seemed to us that themes of
'duality' ran through both the song and our visual idea.

"We took those themes to our stylist, Justine Josephs who, along with our make-up artist Sally Marshall, created two
opposing looks for our dancer, Claire Meehan. We spent a single day shooting in a South East London studio with Chris
Nunn behind the camera and lights.

"Finally came the edit and post-production process: We locked ourselves in the studio for 2 weeks working with After
Effects. The process was pretty organic; we spent a week or so playing with the footage, developing different ideas and
techniques, and then spent a further week moulding the disparate pieces into a solid video that ebbed and flowed in the
right places."

Musically it's a real shame that over the last 2 years or so the direction has gone down a more commercial standard

route, the first few singles and remixes were really unique and standout... guess that's 1 reason why Stephen has now

left the duo. But different strokes for different folks I guess.

It's been a real trend of the last year or so to make advertising more transparent by showing how things are made, in

the actual ad itself. This trend I see appearing more and more everyday, which I personally don't have a problem with,

due to brand transparency. But generally it does start to be a formated idea :-(

But in the case above, Google Chrome Speed Tests are tests! So it really fits in the concept to have how it's done

and a more behind the scenes look. This also makes a usually very technology based product much more humanistic

and interesting and appealing to a wider audience. Great job!!!

I seem to remember Sagmeister showing this at OFFF last year in Lisbon. I'm pretty sure he had nothing to do

with the Absolut ads in the latter of 2009... as it came under a lot of diss from the creative industry, due to various

reasons I won't go into now. Not that he invented this typography in situ style, but he did really reinvent it and make

it his own (which many designers jumped on in their work) Anyway I'm glad this is finally out and to see him moving

into other mediums with this typography style ;-) This will probably appeal more to non-creatives, designers etc are

probably subconsciously sick to death with seeing this type of typographic solution :-(

Dr. Martins turned 50 this month and to mark the occasion they've stepped up their presence with some activities

to raise the heritage again and connect with new audiences. They've asked 10 artists to record their version of a cult

classic track which represents the spirit of the people who've worn DM's over the past 50 years. And also asked 10

directors to make videos for each of the tracks.

Nothing new concept wise, but nice content. But with such a history and fan base over the years it would be good

to somehow let fans interact and participant in the anniversary, everyone has a story with this brand.

This is a smart way to reach people virally with your products! A little different from most fashion promo videos.

But why can't you click through to the adidas page with the product info and explore them more?

And why doesn't the YouTube version also have such a product click through feature? Surely you would reach more

people and continue the experience...

All in all a good idea which just needs a little more development and continuation, but then again maybe there is

some reason for not going all the way? I'm sure this type of thing will become quite standard soon, my mind starts

jumping how I could adapt this to some of the brands I work with, but make better ;-) Thanks adidas!

After the success of the previous Volkswagen GTI racing iPhone app, comes this one for the Polo, with a focus on

car efficiency this time, or rather how efficient you are as a driver... how bad do you drive? How can you save petrol etc?

I doubt this app will have the same amount of downloads though, we're see who wants to drive efficiently...

I may end up eating my words... gonna check it out now for playability :-)

But it will bring attention to one of the main assets of the car. And all cars soon I'm sure!
