Beck, David Bowie & Live Music Evolution

Beck has always been a musical cameleon, changing and constantly pushing styles from album to album.
Bowie the same, it's great to see his new album on the top of the charts globally.
Critics are calling it the best come back of all time, but you don't need a critic to tell you that ;-)

In this experience Beck has teamed up with Chris Milk to pay homage to the Bowie track 'Sound & Vision'
- and might just have realised an avenue for the music industry at the same time...
sure there is YouTube live events and other filmed music sites, but this is a much richer experience.

When broadband speeds expand could a fan of an artist pay a small fee to see a live gig
from the other side of the world? As the songs are performed live could you purchase them
first from the site, or at the end of the performance? The interaction here, letting the user
choose their own camera view gives a personalised touch and is something Chris Milk is
really getting great at, involving the audience. You can see this in his other projects for Arcade Fire.
You could still do this with many viewers at the same time if launched a little after the
live performance and the broadband was in place, or let people see in a queuing system
or by a sign-up / notify process. I once worked on a music project called 'Almost Live',
a collaboration between record labels and cinemas, but it was nothing like this.

Spotify are currently looking to expand their brand and services as they don't own
the music you play, they pay the record labels every time you listen to something,
they are rumoured to be getting into TV content, interesting but isn't everyone these days.

IDEA...
So what if Spotify started their own record label with new talent (there is enough out there)...
this would be a perfect platform for them to showcase the best talent on their label and
by creating gigs with bigger artists to headline would create demand and awareness.
By charging a small fee to view the gig it would create a unique revenue system which
supports the up and coming music ;-)

Anyway...

Check out the experience HERE >>>

It will take a while to load, so go do something else for a while ;-)

How to make a hit music video...

Dreams + storytelling + action (in slo-mo) + fast bikes (in slo-mo) include bike stunts...
add a bit of a love story! And mix together with some slick but raw cinematography ;-)

Sam Sure and Giacomo - Dark Inside

ONLINE music video here.

Another interactive music video, this time by Sam Sure and Giacomo. A simple idea that pulls
the user into a interactive 3d video with street scene glimpses of London. Nothing new
technology wise here, but the simplicity of functionality mixed with user curiosity and smart
editing makes a haunting visual soundtrack that just works in combination.

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ go interactive ‘Look Around’

We've seen more and more interactive music videos popping up in the last year or so,
this new one from the Red Hot Chili Peppers is a nice engaging entry for the band into this
arena. Fans and users control which band member they see and can interact with the rooms
to find hidden behind the scenes footage.

YouTube has had a limited form of interactivity for a while, but I can see these type of
executions becoming more wide spread within YouTube and other social networks in the
near future.

You can get more footage and a link to their iPhone app on their site HERE...

Music Video Challenge - New Directors's Showcase

This year, as part of The Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors' Showcase at the Cannes Lions International Festival
of Creativity, Saatchi & Saatchi partners with Vimeo and Moby to discover
yet another unique filmmaking talent,
with a Music Video Challenge.

The brief is simple: interpret and bring to life the idea of 'Hello, Future' in the form of a fantastic music video
for one of Moby's tracks from his new album, 'Destroyed'.

The winner will be announced and their video screened at this year's New Directors' Showcase in Cannes,
as well as on the Vimeo site. Historically, many featured directors in the Showcase have gone on to seriously
successful careers: Tarsem, Michel Gondry, Mark Romanek, Spike Jonze, Ivan Zacharias, Kinka Usher,
Danny Kleinman and Jonathan Glazer included. No pressure.

Kanye West - Runaway (34 minutes of epic)

Kanye West, love his music or hate it... I really like the fact that not only is he pushing himself musically
but visually as well. Not anything new within the history of music, but within his genre he really stands out a lot
with a more artistic approach, which over time has seen his profile grow and should keep him relevant for longer.

Caught this YouTube clip this morning, it was on 645,291 views, tonight it's jumped to 1,647,977!
With Gaga reaching 1 billion YouTube views, these type of big (pop) numbers are something to get used to.

This epic visual opera definitely beats the usual bling approach! Directed by Kanye, written by Hype Williams.

Jon Hopkins - Vessel (Four Tet Remix)

Directed & produced by: Bison. And the process...

BISON: "We'd been looking into an old 3D technique called "Anaglyph", which is the familiar red and cyan version of 3d
that you used to get on the back of cereal boxes. The more we looked at various images that used this technique, the more
we fell in love with the colours and decided that they should drive the aesthetic of the piece. In particular, we were
intrigued as to what might happen if the two images were from drastically different sources.

"The song is full of light and shade; with euphoric melodies and skipping glitchy beats. It seemed to us that themes of

'duality' ran through both the song and our visual idea.

"We took those themes to our stylist, Justine Josephs who, along with our make-up artist Sally Marshall, created two

opposing looks for our dancer, Claire Meehan. We spent a single day shooting in a South East London studio with Chris
Nunn behind the camera and lights.

"Finally came the edit and post-production process: We locked ourselves in the studio for 2 weeks working with After

Effects. The process was pretty organic; we spent a week or so playing with the footage, developing different ideas and
techniques, and then spent a further week moulding the disparate pieces into a solid video that ebbed and flowed in the
right places."

Aeroplane - Superstar (official video)

Nice engaging art direction here for the new Aeroplane single released next week, slightly reminiscent of the
Red Hot Chilly Peppers - Can't Stop, video directed by Mark Romanek. Or MTV's - become a idents maker
(see below)... both playing with randomness to engage.

Musically it's a real shame that over the last 2 years or so the direction has gone down a more commercial standard
route, the first few singles and remixes were really unique and standout... guess that's 1 reason why Stephen has now
left the duo. But different strokes for different folks I guess.

Arcade Fire - The Wilderness Downtown

Arcade Fire have always been progressive online. Knowing that most people watch music videos online, they
have again opted for a richer and more personal experience. Choreographed windows, interactive flocking,
custom rendered maps, real-time compositing, procedural drawing, 3D canvas rendering... this Chrome
Experiment has them all. "The Wilderness Downtown" is an interactive interpretation of Arcade Fire's song
"We Used To Wait" and was built entirely with the latest open web technologies, including HTML5 video,
audio, and canvas. MORE INFO HERE...

Massive Attack - Saturday Come Slow [HD]

Massive Attack use the promo art form, not just as a music video, but as a way to draw attention to Music Torture.
